Why This Page Matters

Cicero's exile is one of the most revealing episodes in the late Republic. It shows how Republican institutions can be weaponised: Clodius uses his tribunate and popular legislation to destroy a political enemy. It shows how private alliances — the triumvirate — can abandon individuals when convenient: Caesar enables Clodius, and Pompey fails to protect Cicero.

Most importantly, it shows the emotional reality of Roman politics. Cicero's letters from exile reveal a man broken by betrayal and loss. The episode exposes the gap between constitutional principle and political reality: a former consul, who had saved the Republic from Catiline, can be driven from Rome by a tribune wielding popular sovereignty as a weapon.
